How to Find the Perfect A/C Unit for Your Home Size

Your air conditioner is one of the most important features in your Wilmington home, especially when the temperatures begin to climb.  But, if you’re looking for a new air conditioner for your home, you can’t just go out and buy any old one.  Air conditioners are not a one size fits all kind of appliance.  In order for your home to remain comfortable and cool, you need to make sure you have the right size.

Why Size Matters

You may be wondering why the size of your air conditioner matters.  When it comes to air conditioners, bigger doesn’t necessarily mean better.  In fact, if you install an air conditioner that is too big, it cools your home too quickly.  While that doesn’t sound like a problem, it really is.  Cooling your home too quickly results in short, and more frequent cycles, wearing out your air conditioner quicker.  Also, if the cycle is too short, it doesn’t have time to properly dehumidify the air, leaving your home feeling damp and uncomfortable.

On the other hand, you don’t want to go too small either.  An air conditioner that is too small will run nonstop.  This not only causes significant stress to the unit, wearing it out faster, it also causes your energy bills to soar painfully high.

How Air Conditioner Size is Measured

Air conditioners are measured in tons.  Each ton represents how many BTUs (British Thermal Units) are cooled per hour.  A one ton air conditioner cools 12,000 BTUs per hour, a two ton unit cools 24,000 BTUs per hour, and so on.  Residential homes will use air conditioners between one and five tons.  Units over five tons are often found in commercial buildings.

So, how exactly is the size calculated?  There is a specific mathematical equation used that involves the square footage of your home.  You multiply square footage by 25, divide by 12,000 and then subtract 0.05.  Sounds simple, right?  Not quite.

Other Factors that Affect Sizing

There’s more to sizing your air conditioner than a simple math equation.  There are several factors that affect the size your home needs.  Of course, square footage is still important, but so, too, are things such as the climate, the layout of your home, its age, insulation, how many windows you have and which direction they face, as well as how much sun your home sees (how much shade is provided by trees).  Not really sure how to factor all of these things into the equation?  Not to worry.  A professional air conditioner installer will be able to do the math for you, helping you to get the perfect air conditioning unit for your home.
